I was watching Ghostbusters with my Sweets, and even by today’s standards is a really good movie. It is both well written, as well as visually grabbing. It was made in 1984, and the ghosts like Slimer and the hell hounds look better than Hulk did in Hulk in 2003. Both my girlfriend and I had no problems with the sequel. And it is a rarity for the sequels to do better in the eyes of the fan following the first one garnered. And looking at the launch date, it was only a week before Batman hit the theatres in 1989 what did anyone expect, in hind sight of course. We also remember the cartoon quite fondly, I also remember wondering why Slimer was a good guy aha!
If I follow the rumour mill, Bill Murray seems to be the stopping point somehow for a third Ghostbusters being made. Is it a co-creator type problem? Not wanting to take on the role again? Dunno, don’t care. I can see his point either way. It’s a biz, and after the last one not considered to be as great as the first, it is a risk perhaps.
So, let’s pretend it’s a go. A start date is set, and production has begun. Which route would or should they take in the most important part, the story. It has been 20+ years since a movie or the cartoon, and there still seem s to be a strong following. It is essential to have all previous cast members in cameo roles at the least, but, next generation of Ghostbusters should happen in my opinion. They could be the children of the original cast. I wouldn’t recommend each of them being comedic stars of today, it doesn’t always equal out to greatness. Personally I would go with one, maybe two well known’s or “lead role” types. Take them and then surround them with a great supporting cast. For example, take a majority of Adam Sandler movies. He’s the lead, and surrounded by great supporting actors. Actors like Rob Schneider, David Spade. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed Joe Dirt, The Hot Chick, etc. They just really shine when they aren’t in the lead role in my opinion. And are sometimes what truly makes the movies funny.
Since the children of the cast, is easier to “explain” with minimal screen time, I’ll go with that.
Original Crew
Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray)
Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd)
Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis)
Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson)
Louis Tully (Rick Moranis)
Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver)
New Cast (Who I would go with)
“Venkman Jr.”-Dane Cook? Ryan Reynolds would be good, but he’s too pretty to play Venkman’s kid. Ryan is a pretty boy and Bill Murray is no pretty boy aha!
“Ray Jr.”-Jonah Hill or Clark Duke
“Egon Jr.”-Jay Baruchel
“Winston Jr.”- Marlon Wayans? Sorry can’t think of anyone young enough at the moment. But no rappers looking to be an actor aha! But, Bobb’e J. Thompson would be good, but too young at the present time.
“Louis Jr.”- Christopher Mintz-Plasse
No Seth Rogan. Not in this film, if anything he would play Ray’s kid. Personally I just like him in roles similar to Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Knocked Up.
I am sure Aykroyd and Ramis will give us a good story. The cast no matter which direction they take, will perform well. So, for the love of Hollywood God, spend a little extra on the special effects and CGI. Keep Slimer the same if its needed to appease the general nerd audience, but I would love to see Thirteen Ghosts calibre spooks. For comedic purposes add some celebrity ghosts, Michael Jackson being the obvious, but I envision Tupac and Biggie arguing over who sold more albums as a ghost aha!
I’m not going to be scared of ghosts in movies, so I like them to grab my attention visually if the movie makers can’t mess with me psychologically. Ghostbusters isn’t a drama so bring on the visuals!
Also, with new younger characters and new ghouls, why not expand on the traditional Ghostbusters method of apprehension? Track them with the P.K.E. Meter and Ecto Goggles, rope them in with the Proton Pack, set off the Ghost Trap and then safely store them in Ecto Containment Unit back at home base.
This could also work using the original cast, older and slower, so new technology is required. So, perhaps bring in a geek or two to supply them with this. Most of the stars that I mentioned would do well in this role, but Masi Oka and Nate Torrence are a perfect casting, together or separately.
All in all, just make another movie. We’ve seen Star Wars, Indiana Jones, among others make a re-debut. We’ve even seen television shows made into big budget motion pictures (A-Team, etc.). I like to pretend that the Ghostbusters video game was a “test the market” type deal.
