It isn’t the easiest thing being a Comic Book Nerd, or even a fan really. No I am not referring to the creative side of things. None of us are always going to be pleased with what we read or look at, the old saying “Can’t please everyone” is very apt in the comic book world. For me art work I am not a fan of will ruin a comic book for me if combined with a poor story. A great story will allow me to over look. For example, I am not a fan of Frank Miller as an artist, but as a writer he is damn impressive.
What I am talking about, is that it is pretty difficult to even locate comic books. Ranging from limited publishers and titles available, to having to travel to the next town to even locate anything. I know this from personal experience. If these blogs were to have taken place back in the early half of the 1990’s, it would be Marvel heavy and very light on the DC Comics. Not that I wasn’t a fan of DC, it was that where I lived as a kid at that time, an island off of Cape Breton Island in good ole Nova Scotia, all I had available were Marvel titles. I know there were some places out there, as my friend would go somewhere for the day, then come back with DC Comics titles like Batman and the newly launched Image Comics and their main draw, Spawn. And I am in no way complaining of the quality of Marvel titles at that time, I was watching the Kubert’s own X-Men and Wolverine, it is just that it would have been nice to have an “option”, especially since it was the Batman who brought me to the dance years prior.
When my family moved back to Ontario, we were just 2 towns away from the town I was born in and lived before heading out east. But, once again only Marvel titles were available to me, and only at certain convenience stores which only carried limited titles. X-Men, but no other X-titles, Amazing Spider-man and some Disney titles, worse variety then I had in the small town I lived in down east. There was for a brief time an actual comic book shop, but picture Comic Book Guy from The Simpson’s, but a lot more grubbier and smelly. That was the owner/operator, and not that I judge on appearance, but I was a young teen so he was a bit of a prick aha. It wasn’t long till it closed, and the convenience stores weren’t even carrying any comic books that weren’t of the Archie nature. Leaving myself, and anyone else who didn`t have subscriptions having to travel to my hometown to locate a comic book store. If your parents wouldn`t take you, you were left with taking the Go Bus, making a venture to pick up a comic book in the price range of close to $10. Needless to say, this is what had caused me to forget about comic books, and enjoy them through television and movies when they were available. Of course I always had what I collected, but not the same when you get nothing new.
I am back in my hometown as an adult, so the journey to a comic shop isn`t as expensive, as I can walk to there. But, I often wonder what happens when I move? What about all the others out there in the same boat I have spent time in? Sure, one could say “everyone has a computer and internet”, but that’s not true really, well not yet, but even if everyone did, basically everything is pay by credit card in some fashion. Money orders are almost obsolete for most online ordering, and not everyone has nor wants a credit card. So, how does the comic book industry solve this problem? A problem I think DC suffers from more than Marvel (Are there any places that don’t carry Spider-man products of some sort?). Which is just another reason to back DC Comics over Disn...er Marvel.

The bigger picture, the larger story. I can’t be the only one who is left after a movie wanting more. Now I know it is a very difficult and long task editing a movie to fit into a 2hour time frame. Add the business side of things, where if it doesn’t make money, it is killed. And of course movies based on novels supply this need (Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, etc), but myself not being an avid reader of novels (in terms of books I prefer autobiographies), I rarely ever get a “planned” film saga. Star Wars did it, with George Lucas having written 9 parts to a very large story. Even launching the middle parts first, making the “prequels” technically not prequels.
Now I know comic book movies are somewhat still “new”, but they provide a perfect opportunity to present a massive story on film. They almost do it, look at Marvel as of late. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and The Incredible Hulk are at least “joined together”, with characters carrying over (Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, etc) and the post credit footage. All this leading up to The Avengers movie that will star all of them (minus Edward Norton as Hulk). A lot of comic book movies are also left open to a sequel, but that is not what I want or am talking about. With majority of the actors/actresses and directors signing on for multiple films, but at times the story is slightly different, actors have aged or gained/lost weight, “voices” are slightly different from previous film. I am a strong believer that movies should not only be planned out to be multiple parts, but preferably filmed in the manner of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. All 3 parts were filmed in a row. For me all the “problems” I had were vanquished. And to be honest, I gained respect for the people involved, obviously they had zero fear of typecasting, which I hear is a typical problem for the film industry. Great, and I mean the really great ones,  prove their greatness by not only taking on these roles, but have the ability to annihilate themselves to be type casted. Perfect example is Harrison Ford. This man was not only Han Solo (who many preferred over Luke Skywalker) but he was Indiana Jones, but he’s not just known for these characters, he’s known for his other roles as well, pretty sure many out there consider him to be the greatest United States President’s ever.....on film that is aha
So, why not take Batman, who is going to do decently in the theatres sales wise as long as you don’t bring in Shumacher again that is, but plan out at least a trilogy and shoot it LOTR’s style. As much as I have enjoyed Nolan’s more realistic take on Batman and company, push the boundaries a bit towards “super powers” and use this time to showcase members of The Justice League that may not be able to carry an entire film on their own (Aquaman? Green Arrow? Better as support imo). Then take Superman, and open the CGI flood gates. Yep I said it. I know a lot out there were disappointed that Supes flew for the first time in a CGI manner, but lets be honest, we are supposed to be seeing a SUPER-man, and we are in an age where a man using wires to simulate flying just doesn’t cut it. If I wanted to see something I could do myself with some friends, I would just watch some fan films. No, I am not knocking those, just saying, when I pay $10 at the theatres, I prefer to see where the money went aha!
Like I said, I understand why they don’t shoot films and plan them in this matter. I don’t like it, but I get it. So, if this can’t be done, then continue on like some have in recent years, and bridge the gaps using animated  films direct to dvd, Apparently Batman: Gotham Knight, the animated film, was filling in the holes between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Personally I didn’t see it that way at all. It was more of a new rendition of past Batman The Animated Series episodes. But, then maybe I heard wrong and that was all it was meant to be. Or like they are doing with Batman: Arkham City, and using a comic book series to fill in the time frame between Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. I only know of DC’s Batman doing these things.
Speaking of games, since DC is milking Chris Nolan’s genius and having him as a consultant for the upcoming Superman flick, Man Of Steel, why not do something similar with Rocksteady, and have them work on a Superman game? True, it doesn’t mean the game will be as good as the Batman: Arkham series, but neither does Nolan’s involvement with Man Of Steel.

I was proven right this weekend. Captain America took top spot this weekend. Mind you it was Harry Potter's sophomore weekend, but still, a comic book movie is in a #1 spot for its opening weekend. So, how was I right? I said DC needs my help more than Marvel does. And I don't think they have even made a Disney backed movie yet.

And to see if I can be right again, I am saying it here, The Dark Knight Rises
will not do as good as The Dark Knight. It will do good and will be a great movie, it's just that I am sure a large number of peeps went to see The Dark Knight
because of Heath's passing. Which is somewhat morbid, but helped the industry I guess. (side note, girlfriend made a good point, it's too bad he didn't get to see just how big it was). But, I could be wrong. And perhaps a lot of people will go see how Anne Hathaway compares to Michelle Pfieffer, both performance wise and well I am sure a lot enjoyed Batman Returns
because of the vinyl aha

Speaking of The Dark Knight Rises, it is apparently going to be the final time Chris Nolan directs, and Christian Bale is Batman. Which is both good and bad. Bad because they could try and continue on with the current storyline, and end up like the previous Batman movie franchise where we saw 3 different men as Bruce Wayne/Batman, a slide from dark into almost campy like the 60's television show, and other things. Now, despite this, there is some good reasons for Nolan and Bale leaving. They could end it, and then re-launch, which is ok. I got my trilogy. Oh, and also Chris Nolan apparently said that as long as he's at the helm, there will never be another appearance by The Joker.......um....ok, bye-bye then, thanks for the great Batman films, please take the helm of other comic book films, I will watch your other movies cause you really are very talented (The Prestige?
Inception? Greatness), but no disrespect to Ledger, the Clown Prince of Crime shouldn't die with him, he simply set a new standard for the character, and damn high one, but nothing more.

I would almost dare say that the movies would need The Joker. To show I am not being bias, Mr. J is the top villain or most known of Batman's Rogue Gallery, like it or not. So, you could use his "star power" to draw people in and then present the audience with other villains. Either to "test" the character on the big screen or to lead into the next film, that may need a little extra help connecting the dots or keep the audience wanting to watch the next film because they are intrigued by the medium-small glimpse at this character. It's risky to throw out just any character on their own, and Batman only has so many top villains, and since they seem to double them up except for Joker's appearances, they need to at least test the waters with them, not just cameos with no real story behind them.

Here is a list of villains who have made it into the 8 movies that made it to the big screen.

  1. The Joker (3x)
  2. Catwoman (3x,4 if you count Halle's)
  3. The Penguin (2x)
  4. The Riddler (2x)
  5. Two-Face (2x, 3 if you count Dee Williams appearance in 89's)
  6. Bane (2x)
  7. Poison Ivy (1x)
  8. Scarecrow (2x)
  9. Ra's al Ghul (2x)
  10. Mr. Zsasz (1x-cameo)
  11. Mr. Freeze (1x-almost forgot Arnold aha)

Now, for 3 film franchises (is that even the right word? I am sure you get me), there shouldn't be doubles or triple appearances, with cameos and giant goose eggs for many other good to great Bat-Villains. True, Nolan and Bale could be replaced by adequate people, and the current franchise roles on. But one flop and I am sure they will pull the plug, and it is back to the repackaging stage.

So, let's imagine it's re-launched. I always say plan and film it like they did Lord Of The Rings, straight through, but I can see why that's hard to do. Either way, write a larger story and break it down into parts. Obviously use the mainstream villains to put butts in the seats, but again use some screen time to show Gotham City's other villains. Test the audience with lesser known, or ones your unsure could carry a film on their own. Eventually people will almost know what to expect using the same names every time a title is revamped. That will lead to radical writings and stories so far from the genre of Batman that could be just horrible. One of the things I liked about Nolan's films, was Scarecrow showing up in The Dark Knight, and Ra's al Ghul is somehow tied into The Dark Knight Rises. Two characters that in my opinion could not carry a whole movie alone, were put together at a time when the focus was really more on Batman's story then who he was facing, but were then used in smaller roles in later films. I would have liked to see Zsasz make another appearance.

Here's a list of characters that I would use in small roles in a re-launch, but a re-launch that keeps close to Nolan's "realness". Some I will give my take on how I would, others I'll leave to the pros or think they are fine as is aha

  • Arkham Asylum. I know it's not a character and made appearances in Batman Forever and Batman Begins, but this could be used for so many things Batman is trying to figure out (go read The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, and see how they used Calendar Man). It is an opportunity to show different sides of characters, not too different, but people, crazy or not, act different when they are "contained". Plus, villains have ego's, and it can't be easy watching someone else doing what you couldn't. They could have some villains go in only slightly insane, and come out with the level of insanity needed to intrigue us aha As for the "who" turns them that way is open too, an inmate manipulating a warden or doctor, Scarecrow before being caught, Hugo Strange? They could definitely test the market, with Batman walking down the hallways with as many inmates they want standing there, then ask later online who the audience liked seeing the most, then plan to implement them later. I could go on aha
  • Man-Bat. Ok, how do I keep it realistic with him? Well, he doesn't last long I can tell you that ahaha I would perhaps have Dr. Kirk Langstrom take his formula, while competing for a contract against another scientist. Langstrom is so confident that his formula will work that he tests it on himself, and it almost works, mutating him into something that resembles Man-Bat, only to then fail and Langstrom dies mutated on the floor. He's found by co-workers and the person offering the contract, which leads to the next character.
  • Killer Croc. Waylon Jones suffers from Epidermolytic Hyperkeratosis as usual, but he looks more human like in the graphic novel Joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. He starts smaller as a test subject of the Venom formula (which is later used on Bane), which causes him to enhance in size and muscle mass slightly. Unprepared for the results, the scientist lose control of Jones who breaks out.
  • Mr. Zsasz. Not changing much, 'cause he's already pretty "real". A serial killer. But I would make him a more prominent member of Gotham City's High Society. Perhaps give him a more "typical" serial killer upbringing. Perhaps have him accused, or responsible for some of the murders at the hands of Hush (Dr. Thomas Elliot).
  • Hush
  • Black Mask
  • Firefly. I would have him burn at some point from one his fires while trying to escape Batman. His survival only enhances his pyromania.
  • Killer Moth. Perhaps a Buffalo Bill from Silent of The Lambs remake? Moth in their throats, human suit for his "rebirth", etc.
  • The Ventriloquist and Scarface. I know your thinking, a man and a toy? Personally I think if you make him really dark, perhaps twisted in a Jigsaw from Saw type way, it could work.
  • The Mad Hatter. His small stature is a must. Perhaps Seth Green could pull this off. I would also team him with Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who are obviously his muscle. I would also consider him having a hand in the creation of Poison Ivy. Taking place, none other than in the botanical gardens ahaha
  • Poison Ivy. Thurman was a rare good thing about Batman & Robin, but Ivy needs a redo on the big screen. For starters a natural red haired actress. One with a nice auburn coloured red mane. To keep her "real", not so much controlling of the plant world, and she uses the toxins plants can produce as her weapons in a different manner (poison darts, spike drinks, etc).
  • Harley Quinn. Perhaps similar to Ledger's Joker. The late Brittany Murphy would have been a perfect casting in my opinion.

Of course many others could be used, but the point is made I think. And your own opinions also prove these characters need some spotlight even if just a little bit.

And with Batman's large list of Villains, along with his pretty big list of local allies, a serious live action television show could work wonderfully. Especially if it's all shot in the same style as Sin City. Picture it. Go ahead take a moment. Awesome isn't it? And if Batman is to be older (since Sin City is from Frank Miller, who gave us The Dark Knight Returns, among others), have Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) play the Caped Crusader.

Is it wrong that I am happy to be complaining about this heat? Although the humidity kills me, it's nice to have a "normal" summer, instead of the rainy almost cold summers that have occurred over the last few years. But, I'll take it over our Canadian Winters, which seems to also be back on track. One year I saw trees budding in January. Up here? That's not normal ahaha!

I read and hear a lot about DC and their lack of Big Screen movies. And I totally agree. However, I can somewhat see where they are coming from, their competitors launch at least two movies a year, and with the economy with the cost of tickets nowadays, a lot of people are left having to choose. And personally it is not that easy anymore to find a babysitter.

So, my question is, why hasn't DC Comics capitalized on what they have somewhat dominated through the years? And that being live action television shows. Batman in the 1960's, Wonder Woman in the 70's. The Flash and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in the 1990's. With Smallville taking the cake and running 10 seasons in the new millennia.

Ok, so maybe The Flash only lasted a season, but personally I liked it. Batman only lasted two and a half, but ran twice a week the first two seasons, so technically it lasted a lot longer. And yes recently they attempted to run a new Wonder Woman series, but in my opinion it was a weak story from what I read, they could kill two stones and have it take place during Diana's Amazonian Training days. This would appeal to comic book fans, and those old Xena fans who I am sure have been waiting for a redub of that series aha!

Now maybe there has been tons of ideas that just never make it into the later stages of production, or perhaps they were playing it safe and riding Superman's cape (or lack there of) in Smallville.

Speaking of Smallville, similar to The Simpson's or The Trailer Park Boys , should continue onto the Silver Screen. Capitalize on their small screen success, I am pretty sure it's what they were doing in the 60's when Batman: The Movie came out I think after the first of its two and a half seasons on air. This is also why I wonder (and to be honest I want) why there isn't more television shows out there? Use the power of television to present the heroes of DC Comics. Use unique storylines to bring in new viewers, who may then be interested in the comics.

I almost guarantee it would work. Worked on me somewhat. I was never really a fan of Superman, he was "too perfect". His only weakness, were pieces of his home planet, which were also rare. Just wasn't appealing to me on anything other than the big screen. I was only interested in his comics when he "died", and the "Lois & Clark" television show. But both were more of a result of my grandmother urging me to buy them, and watch the show with her ahaha! I also skipped most of the beginning of Smallville, but caught a preview of one of the later seasons and decided to give it a go. And I, along with my girlfriend, was hooked. It showed a vulnerable side more often, and I needed that. But, back to my point, it brought me in to where I am going to give The Man of Steel a chance come September when DC
Comics re-launch the Universe. Also, giving Green Lantern a shot, after seeing the movie, even though its Sinestro and not Hal come September. That failed apparently box office wise, I can't understand why and now maybe no sequel, but it failed. Is Green Lantern not as known in homes as one would think? I hope it wasn't people listening to critics, aka failed actors/writers, and didn't go. For comic fans it was good.

Maybe I am alone in this thought process, maybe not. All I know, is that I am eventually going to get tired of all the Animated movies. I love them, and it's an okay way to show origins or major stories, but I prefer to see people acting, even if they are CGI'd for moments. And waiting 2+ years for sequels that may not occur on the big screen is harsh, and with DC its beyond words. So, start here I say.

And in closing, again I like the animation. But also, next time the Dark Knight appears on a television series, don't let it be an animated one. Nothing has captured the magic of the 90's yet. Not in my opinion anyway. The Batman was ok, I liked it more because I used it as a tool to bond with my lil nerdy. Luckily she's a bit too old for Batman: Brave and the Bold ahaha!

Friday, July 22, 2011

Well, I have been thinking, which is all I ever do really aha But, I find myself still a bit confused, no, more like intrigued, by the DC re-launch. Yesterday I mentioned how Hal Jordan is not the Green Lantern, and that Sinestro would be taking over. But, as I was relooking through "DC Comics: The New 52 #1" again, and realized that good ole Hal was still sporting the Lanterns ring, he can be found in Justice League Of America. So, I now wonder if Sinestro's run will be long term or just a chance to watch him succumb to the power of Fear?

Speaking of JLA, I wasn't planning on buying and reading the title, I prefer all things Gotham, but I am a fan of Jim Lee's art work, and that's who is behind the pencils for JLA. Might have to as I love his version of the Bat. Was glad to see Kubert (get Adam and Andy confused a lot) had a run in Batman. And hope he returns! When I was "denied" Batman as a kid (wasn't sold where I lived!), it was the X-titles that filled the void. "X-Men #25" and "Wolverine #75" are still some of my all time favourite comic books based on the art work alone.

So, like I said I am intrigued. I was since they announced the re-launch. I admit, is some fear there also. Examples such as Harley joining Suicide Squad don't make me a happy camper, I do however love her new look. The red and black hair does make her more "up to date" in my opinion. Plus I can't wait to color half of my girlfriends hair red for Wizard Worlds 2012 Toronto Comic Con aha! And its the appearance of things that truly have me intrigued. I am a wanna-be artist, so the "look" of everyone and everything has me in can't wait mode.

Here's a list of things that I wonder about concerning mostly Bat-titles, some are already answered, but wonder how long that will last.

  • The Batcave. How it will look and what it will contain.
  • Batvehicles. What will the Batmobile look like, what other vehicles will make their way into The
    Batcave.
  • Arkham Asylum. The look and the history behind it. Will "All-Star Western" affect the history at all?
  • Villains. What will they look like? Who will even make it into print? How will their origins change if at all?
  • Batgirl. Barbara Gordon is once again dawning the cape and cowl. Will her paralyses and the events that occurred at the hands of The Joker be erased? Altered? Or will she be similar to Bruce Wayne after Bane broke his back?
  • Nightwing. Red Hood. Red Robin. How will their history change if at all? With Damian now as Robin beside his father Bruce, how did Bruce find time to train all three of these guys as Robin before him? I read the clock was rolling back a bit, but if they don't then this works. If not, then my question remains.
  • How long will Poison Ivy remain in "Birds Of Prey"? Or have we lost a main villain and its not to a a great series like "Gotham City Sirens"? Don't read "BOP", but I do/did read "GCS" so its the preferred aha
  • How long will Harley Quinn stay away from her Puddin'? Read Ivy's for same thing.
  • WHO WILL SURVIVE? I have read in a few places that DC is willing to axe a title if the sales are low. Will all the Bat-titles make the cut? How about returning legends like Swamp Thing?

I am curious about other things (Superman's not with Lois Lane apparently? Forever? Or is this a redo of their relationship?), and I am sure this is DC's plan. Drop hints to keep us wondering. I just pray that Comic Book Nerds aren't like Star Wars fans were with Episodes I-III. Personally (shields head), I prefer the newer Star Wars over the old. Why? Umm, Lightsabers? Jedi? Sith? How could you not get lost in Obi Wan
and Anakin's epic battle in "Revenge Of The Sith"? Not just the look, but the skill involved (those glowing beams are actually green poles, so it is open to accidents).

I am getting sidetracked aha! Back to the comic books.

Like I had said, some of my questions were possibly answered already. Here is a list of things that I have picked up on from "DC Comics: The New 52 #1". Will focus more on Batman, as I can notice some things art wise that aren't the "stereotype".

  • Superman loses the tights. Now, he has Jeans and a Superman T-Shirt. With a little red cape....or does he? While "Action Comics #1" shows hints of what I mentioned, but "Superman #1" (as well as "JLA") he is sporting a suit. Not the classic suit, this is all blue, with red boots, belt and cape. The Superman emblem is similar, yet slightly changed from what I can tell.
  • Was Superboy a cyborg? I know not always, but circa Death Of Superman? I dunno. Don't like the look. But just my imo.
  • Maybe its just an error, but Sinestro rocks his ring on his left hand, where all other Lanterns wear them on their right.
  • A member of the Red Lanterns could pass for Harley Quinn. Gawd I hope she ends up back in Gotham.
  • The Riddler sports a green mow hawk in the shape of "?". Really?
  • Killer Croc is a Croc? He's green so I get the walking crocodile vibe. I really like the version in "Joker".
  • Speaking of him, looks like the lost that bullet hole scar on his forehead (at least I hope, looked silly and I got a vibe from it I won't mention). Hard to tell which "look" they are going to go with. Hoping for a Heath, or better yet straight out of "Joker". Newer readers are going to to recognize or relate to the style that Heath portrayed in "The Dark Knight". But, I am being very bias on this one aha
  • DC is milking the name of Batman? There are eleven titles that are Batman, or stemmed directly from Batman ("Nightwing", "Red Hood and The Outlaws", etc). And if you add other titles that will include the Dark Knight ("JLA"," Justice League International") that makes 13, and with Red Robin in "Teen Titans" there lies a chance for another appearance. Not complaining, just pointing it out aha!

"Captain America: First Avenger" opens this weekend. I won't be going. Money is tight, and when I got it, I am spending it on DC films. As I feel they need the help more now that Marvel has the marketing machine that is Disney behind them now. I'll just wait for the DVD. Those I collect both Marvel and DC ahaahahahahaahahahahaahahahahaa!

Thursday, July 21, 2011

I went to my local comic shop (Worlds Collide, love the name) to pick up "DC Comics: The New 52 #1". Just to see what really is happening this coming September with the re-launch. I must admit that this was pretty smart, as I am sure many out there are like me and have been sitting here for weeks trying to figure out what was truth and fiction from the reports scattered across the net.

Well, the issue helped, but only a little bit. Very brief descriptions of the titles so they didn't give too much away. But, confirmed things that were reported but I couldn't "believe".

Example, Green Lantern will be about Sinestro, not Hal Jordan. I have never been a real follower of the Lantern. But, I know enough to know, Sinestro is one of the best VILLAINS ever. Is this perhaps why he's now going to be returning to the Green Lanterns? Villains do seem to be more intriguing than some heroes. Especially when the villain is a "fallen hero". So, although I am sitting here wondering WTF are they gonna do with Hal? But at the same time a bit interested in seeing how this plays out.

One thing that I am not a fan of in any aspect, is that my Sweets...er The Joker's Sweets, Harley Quinn, is now a member of the Suicide Squad. Are you serious? Harley, in my opinion, belongs in Gotham City. I feel that they should have had her do this before the relaunch, could have even crossed-over with "Gotham City Sirens" (which I will miss greatly) and had HQ join in the end to save Catwoman and Ivy.

Also, I think there a few too many titles. 10 or 11 different titles in the Batman line alone. The only reason I like this, is for future cross-over stories (ie "KnightFall"), as it makes for a massive story, and fun to collect all the issues needed for the story.

Other than that, I am really looking forward to this re-launch. As a Nerd who is re-entering the comic world (explain where I went at another time), and was wondering "where" to jump back in, this is the best time for me to do so. I am also, getting my daughter (whom I call my Nerdy) into the genre too. And again, great time to get her started.

A message to all those money hungry assclowns out there. I know your gonna rush out and scoop up as many #1's as you can. Just do us a favour, and by #'s 2-up in the same fashion! I will be grabbing more #1's then just "Batman" and "Detective Comics", but thats to see if I would like to continue (Action Comics, Superman, The Flash and Green Lantern).

I was going to type out the titles and the dates they drop. But, I have decided to encourage you to head to your local comic book store and pick up your own issue of "DC Comics: The New 52 #1". Its absolutely FREE, and everyone loves free shizz! Plus, while your there take a look around, spoil yourself and buy something.

Well, I guess I should start things off by trying to explain, in my opinion, the difference between "Geeks" and "Nerds". For those wondering WTF is a "Non-Geeky Nerd?"

I am a Nerd, and I like Geeks, they make MY world a better place aha There isn't all that much of a difference between the two really, the amount of common ground makes it hard to tell the difference at times, both can be socially awkward or fit perfectly into "normal" society, ok Geeks a tad more likely (what's "normal"? I have no clue aha). Both will dive deeper than others into comic books, movies and television then the average person. The difference is in "intelligence". To me Geeks are highly intelligent, sometimes off the chart brilliant (hence more likely to be socially awkward, hard to find others to relate). Now I am in no way saying Nerds are stupid. No, no. Far from it. Look at it like this, a Nerd will play or even design the video game, where a Geek made the system your playing it on.

Here is a list of "Celebs" or "Characters" who fall into "Geek" or "Nerd" territory imo.

GEEKS

  • Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Big Bang Theory)
  • Prof. Frink (The Simpson's)
  • Lewis Skolnick (Revenge Of The Nerds)
  • J.T. (Grandma's Boy)
  • Bill Gates

NERDS

  • Stuart the comic book store owner (Big Bang Theory)
  • Comic Book Guy (The Simpson's)
  • Dudley Dawson aka Booger (Revenge Of The Nerds)
  • Carl, Convenience Store Manager (Family Guy)
  • Seth Green

NERDS &GEEKS SOMETIMES MISTAKEN FOR JOCKS (or close to that)

  • Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones movies-obviously)
  • Tony Stark aka Iron Man
  • Dr. Hank McCoy aka Beast (X-Men)

I would say just compare "Star Trek" fans to "Star Wars" fans, the Trekkies (or is it Trekkers?Aha!) go as far as learning Klingon, Vulcan, etc., but then I remember that there are some Star Wars Fanboys who speak fluent Twi'lek aha! And I picture Geeks having the brain capacity to do this aha!

Did that help at all? Aha! Okay, perhaps "Booger" wasn't really a Nerd or a Geek, even though he did become a lawyer and did win at least one case. But compared to the rest of the guys in "Revenge Of The Nerds" he was the Nerd among Geeks. But, the others on the list are good examples I think.

In future blogs I hope to cover things such as new comics, new movies, pro wrestling, etc. Old movies for sure, as I tend to look for the positives in old disasters such as "Batman & Robin" (Bat-Nipples actually makes their debut in "Batman Forever" btw. Look at Kilmer's rubber suit at the beginning, among the more muscular looking rubber I see nips). Although I admit that I do this because Comic Book movies were so scarce back in the day that I found it better to enjoy what I liked instead of ranting over the negatives. But don't get me wrong, I can be quite negative at times, an A$$hole if you will aha!

Oh, and the blogs will tend to be DC Comics heavy as I feel they need my and all of your help to compete with Marvel. ESPECIALLY movie wise. That new Disney money will make Marvel's movies even more money. But, I will digress at a later date. I need focus on making sure I get my DC #1's that I want before the Money Makers try and scoop them all. So far, my plane is to definetly read "Batman" and "Detective Comics". But gonna pick up "Action Comics", "Superman", "The Flash" and "Green Lantern" to see where they are taking the titles, and if I like what I see, I'll continue to read and collect them. I also need to ask my daughter which titles she want to start reading and collecting (its her rookie year), I let her choose from the female titles like "Batgirl", "Batwoman", "Supergirl" and "Wonder Woman". More on why at another date, but I hope she picks "Gotham" titles, so I can read them too aha!

Till I ramble again (which I do A LOT.....on a computer aha!). Peace.
