Not sure I really deserve the title of "gamer". Sure, I play video games and have been since I was about 5-6 years old. Certain games will cause me to obsess and play the hell out of them for stretches of time. The choices though that trigger that from me are limited. Grand Theft Auto and Batman: Arkham series are the only things that do that. Haven't played any wrestling games in years, but those used to bring the gamer within, out for awhile. Grand Theft Auto V has and hasn't done that. Haven't gotten anywhere near completion of the main story, but the online has me slightly hooked. Even then though, it is almost purely "solo". Real gamers know almost everything, or at the least know every aspect of their favorite franchises. Who voiced them, who made them, etc. This just isn't me to an extent. Sure, I know that Keven Conroy and Mark Hamil voiced Batman and The Joker in the Batman: Arkham series, but that is also because their voices go all the way back to Batman: The Animated Series from when I was a prepubescent. That and every comic book site was covering the news on the games, for obvious reasons haha
Now, you may think I am possibly putting myself down or something. I'm not, as I have seen the positives of this. It is like other things really. An example would be with the Assassin's Creed franchise. Apparently, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag wasn't well received by those who fell in love with the franchise during Assassin's Creed I-III. I however, had never played the earlier installments, and that may be why I actually enjoyed Black Flag. The reason most likely being that I had zero expectations going in. I simply had finished Batman: Arkham Knight on my newly purchased PS4, and was looking for a new game. And since the selection is still somewhat limited, I didn't have much to choose from and plus it was on sale. Regardless, it has made me interested in playing more of the installments in the franchise (which I have with Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, which I also enjoyed, and will be getting Assassin's Creed: Unity as well).
I also heard a rumor that the PS5 will be purely digital games, with no hard copies. I'm a "collector" and like to "hold" onto things that I purchase. This will suck for me at first, and possibly cut back my gaming. Being in my mid to late 30's at that time will have nothing to do with it haha Seriously though, it won't haha
Another "positive" has been that I may notice and enjoy the smaller things in things like graphics and game play. A real Gamer will notice and like/dislike things too, but they may standout more to people like me. It's hard at times not to walk outside and think about Grand Theft Auto V. Graphics and detail upgrades are amazing to me.
Or is the monicker "gamer" similar to that of "nerd" and "geek"? Where it is simply enjoying something a scoch more than the average person? In that case, I would be a gamer, just like I am a nerd. And when you think about that, a lot more people are nerds than what we think. Other than the obvious, what is the difference between someone who likes video games or comic books and someone who knows everything about an athlete, sports team, car, etc etc? But, that is a topic for another day. Till then.
